Breakouts for July 21st: The first pick, ATMI, confirmed its earlier break of $30.11 by holding support on an intraday test. The stock closed at a new all-time high on higher volume after releasing earnings. The stock also survived an analyst downgrade by Adams Harkness. The point-n-figure chart shows an ascending triple top breakout from June 9th, but has managed to surpass its initial price target of $31.50. Supporting the break in price was a breakout in on-balance-volume and a new near term high in the MACD trigger line. Slow stochastics are firmly in bullish territory - so there should be some juice left in the tank. I am looking for a measured move price target. The second pick, GTF, sits very much in the momentum players court as it continues its rally from the summer of 2004 when it was trading at $1.25. There is continued reason to buy; a higher volume breakout following a low volume base and a MACD trigger line 'buy'. The point-n-figure target of $5.63 has almost been met as part of the February 3rd ascending triple top breakout. I have set a measured move price target but this could run as far as $10 before selling takes over. The third pick, SYK, managed to surpass two resistance levels on the back of a Fool.com article - although opportunities to buy in the 'no-mans-land' of $50.50 - $52.65 should present themselves over the coming days. The break in price was supported by similar breaks in the MACD trigger line and on-balance-volume. Key resistance lurks at $56 - a break of this price would complete a 13-month base and would be very bullish for the stock. A solid Investors Business Daily ranking makes this an appropriate stock for dollar-cost-averaging or retirement accounts (but I would ignore its measly 0.2% yield). Wednesday marked a triple top breakout on the point-n-figure chart with a price target of $66.00 - close to the projected base target c$62.
