Breakouts for July 19th: The weak market has limited the quality of recent breakouts. The following three all show upside merit, although it would be advised to use closest support for stops to protect against the influence of market weakness. It does open the door to whipsaw, but reduces the degree of risk. For the purposes of my analysis I will use prior lows for stops. The strongest candidate of the three is HBP. It reported strong earnings and more importantly, raised outlook. The stock gapped up above previous resistance, although technical weakness remains with respect to bearish divergences in MACD, on-balance-volume, and slow stochastics. A price target of $10.00 is set per psychological resistance, but there is no overhead supply to prevent a higher move. Beat down stock MSO was a big gainer on the day following Martha Stewart's sentencing. Given the huge jump in price it would not be a rush buy at these levels, a pullback would provide a better entry. If taking a slice of the pie here one could run tighter stops on a loss of $11.30 or $9.92. Keep on the watch list. Resistance at $15.00 should be significant so I would suggest using price targets below this price. The most recent news for HIH related to mortgage financing on July 12th. The stock has broken near term resistance, but prices rest against a more significant declining trendline. Technicals are improving and a move to $12.50 looks feasible.
